ASK YOUR CHILD, “If you can be anyone or anything what would it be?”
PROMPT THEM TO CONSIDER ROLES OUTSIDE OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE OR USUAL ROLES and be sure to encourage them to think about “traditional” male or female roles.
ASK YOUR CHILD, “Is a Police Officer a boy or girl (man or woman) role? Is a Firefighter a boy or a girl role? Is an astronaut a boy or girl role? Is a scientist a boy or a girl? Is a race car driver a boy or girl role?”
BE SURE TO ENCOURAGE your child to explore and expand their thinking that women can be anything and so can men.
As you read the book with your child, ask them if any of the roles that Rose takes on is appealing to them and challenge them to dream about what else they can do. SHOW YOUR CHILD THEY CAN BE ANYTHING.
ASK YOUR CHILD IF THEY CONSIDERED ANY OF THESE ROLES? HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THEM?
Encourage your child to play, whether it’s princesses or highway patrol officer. At an early age, girls can formulate opinions about what is traditionally female role and another as male however to small children it is important to encourage them that it is all the same - it is important not to categorize. Encourage her to pursue her passions. Be sure to raise their consciousness about these traditional beliefs while also empowering them by communicating that their ideas and opinions matter.
